What Really Causes Acne?
Acne is incredibly common, so if you have it, you’re definitely not alone! You can take comfort in knowing it is the most common skin condition in the world and affects millions of people.
Acne is a skin condition that happens when pores get clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Factors like excess oil, hormonal changes, stress, and even certain skincare products can all contribute to breakouts. When your pores become blocked, bacteria can build up, leading to pimples, blackheads, or whiteheads. Understanding what triggers your acne is an important first step toward finding the right approach to keep your skin clear and healthy. Although acne largely affects teenagers and young adults, often starting from puberty, it can occur at any age.
How Can You Identify Your Acne Type?
It’s common for this condition to appear on the face, forehead, chest, neck, upper arms, upper back, and shoulders, and the symptoms vary based on the severity of your condition.
Acne presents in many different forms. Some of the most common symptoms are persistent, red spots on the skin known as pimples, along with blackheads, whiteheads, and red swellings or lumps under the skin.
There are many subtypes, such as cystic acne, which is associated with deep, pus-filled pimples, acne as a side effect of medications, adult hormonal acne that occurs due to hormonal fluctuations, and acne mechanica, a type that may occur when your skin is constantly squeezed or exposed to pressure (such as when you wear tight or restrictive clothing).
All of these types can be bad for your self-esteem and eventually lead to lasting skin damage, so it’s best to seek help from a dermatologist early before your condition becomes more difficult to manage. By accurately identifying the underlying causes and subtype, we can tailor the best treatment plan for you!
How Can Acne Outbreaks and Scarring Be Treated Effectively?
Are you struggling with breakouts? It’s important to address acne with professional medical treatment, especially if your outbreaks are persistent, severe, or leave behind scars. Starting your treatments as early as possible can also lower the risk of scarring. Dr. Taylor Hilton can examine your skin and determine a diagnosis.
Clearing Pimples and Blemishes Effectively
Many non-prescription treatments and medications can be beneficial for this condition, including benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and topical retinol gels and creams. Some patients benefit from oral or topical prescription retinoids or antibiotics to reduce bacteria and inflammation, or other medications.
Reducing Acne Marks and Scars
Many of our patients also have scars as a result of the inflammation from blemishes. You may have atrophic (indented) scars, hypertrophic/keloid (raised) scars, or often, a combination of both.
Dr. Hilton may recommend in-office treatments such as steroid injections for raised scars, injectable dermal fillers for depressed scars, laser acne scarring treatments, microneedling, or, in some cases, surgical acne scar removal.
Depending on your skin condition and scar type, our dermatology team will need to perform one of these therapies or a combination of different approaches to improve your skin’s appearance. Ask us which treatment is best suited for your condition.
Is There Any Way of Preventing Breakouts?
Many physicians believe that there is no way to fully prevent this skin condition. Luckily, there are ways to calm your skin and minimize future outbreaks. A consistent, good skincare routine can help. We recommend washing with a mild cleanser twice a day, using non-comedogenic (products that are formulated to avoid blocking pores) or sensitive skin products, and applying a moisturizer and SPF 30, broad-spectrum sunscreen daily. Remember not to pick or squeeze your skin, as this can make inflammation worse.
